Bocce On! – Yountville – August 13, 2026 – Do-Si-Do!

The second half of the bocce season continues as more than a few players are still on vacation, resulting in some creative partner matching.
Monday, July 27, saw club President Joe Holko filling Court Manager Charles Ainsworth’s shoes and running the box. Giulio Giuliani partnered for two matches with Rosella Giuliani, and a third match with Sandy Fagan, who played her first two matches with Andrea Holko.
Giulio ended up with the most points for the night at 23. Next up were Nadine Monroe and Lilette Taylor, who are increasingly hard to beat, at 22. Mike Murrell and Jim Cherniss finished with 21 points. Mario Pirondini rolled the only bellringer of the evening.
Wednesday had the largest turnout of the week with 11 teams in play. More creative partnering ensued with Carol Shirmang teaming up with Julie Worthington for a match against Steve Rogers and Marco Wright. Marilyn Cardone and Kathy Phillips had a great night winning all three of their matches. Lisa and Robbie Whitham were right behind with 23 points. Carol Shirmang finished the night with 22 points. Bellringers were celebrated for Guido Muratori, John Dorenbecher and Keith Thomas.
Thursday night had a small group, but exciting play. Heather and Evelyn Donoviel prevailed over Dana Dellascio and Fred Espinoza who rolled two bellringers. Ernie Cabral and Mike Muters had a perfect night and ended with 24 points. Adrian Calderon teamed with Mark Fogelman for the night and rolled a bellringer as well.

On Monday, Aug. 3, it was my turn to play court manager and run the box, assigning teams to courts and managing play. Giulio and Rosella Giuliani continued their stellar play and won all three of their matches. This night also featured the first “Cherniss v. Cherniss” match with Cheryle Stanley and Karen Cherniss facing off against Mike Murrell and Jim Cherniss. The men won out, and Mike and Jim ended the evening with 23 points. Priscilla Hegner and Sharron O’Neill also had a close to perfect night with 23 points. Mike Murrell rolled the single bellringer of the evening. As the sun set, the matchup of Jack and Ellen Nelson and Mac and Jodi Akin was still rolling along, point by point. Eventually, Jack and Ellen Nelson prevailed, ending another fun and hot bocce night.
Wednesday night had 11 teams participating. Marianne and Jim Lyon, and Lisa and Robbie Whitham, were the big winners gaining 24 points. Tom and Amy Bardessono were just one point off with 23 points. Marilyn Cardone partnered with both Pam Williams and Sherry Breitigam for her three games. The bell was ringing for bellringers rolled by Terry Bremer, Joel Breitigam, Guido Muratori, John Simi and Steve Zanetell.
Thursday night won the bellringer count with seven total, including two by Adrian Calderon!
Others rolling a perfect 4 score (aka “bellringer”) were Mark Fogelman, Fred Espinoza, Renee Garske, Ernie Cabral and Mike Muters. Perfect scoring teams included Court Manager Jim and Dawn Conley, Dana Dellascio and Fred Espinoza, and Bob and Renee Garske, all scoring 24 points each. Mark Fogelman and Adrian Calderon were next with 21 points.
The race continues to determine the qualifiers for the year-end tournament. The top five individual scorers for each night will be qualified to play. Any other YV Bocce Club member who wants to compete is invited to participate in the Wild Card Roll-Off, which will precede the tournament and determine the 16th seed player. See you at the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 26!
