Les Deux Magots ‘Alterations’

Poets met at the Les Deux Magots, AKA Hill Family tasting room, on Wednesday, Oct. 10. Our theme was Alterations. We were inspired by famous quotes about alterations interpreted as change or modification.
George Bernard Shaw wrote that “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”
Trish Hanley wrote that words can hold the power of change:
I wrap the poets’ words around me
Words that sing into the air
Words that heal
Words that startle
Tenderness and Strength
Envelope me
Hold me
Until I am no longer mute
Patricia Reis penned that:
Age and experience help me
To see change as a response to
My needs
my choices
Gandhi offered: “Be the change you wish to see in the world”
L. Roe Hyland twisted our thoughts about alterations:
I sense a shift in these shimmering golden years
To a deeper place a deeper space
Within me
to an altar where
There is no alteration
only love
Geoff Leigh asked: “Do I morph or transmute, or simply shuffle my mess around?”
I willingly responded, “Or maybe are we given a chance to contemplate what is still unknowable?”
Maya Angelou sid of change: “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.”
Cathy Carsel nudges us to, “Open our hearts, be a nurturer to those who are broken.”
Valli Ferrel writes how people can change, can alter how we live our lives:
I am altered
body refitted, lithe, pain-free
mind rendered clear
serene
because my heart is salved by the love of a forever friend
Heraclitus wrote of change that emphasizes inevitability and importance, “Nothing is permanent except change.”
Betsy Roman looked at a rose deeply into its heart:
In expected beauty of a transition
a living anthology of life’s alterations
Kathryn Goldman invited us to consider:
Find the person in charge of stamping my life
and redeem my extended warranty
If we could alter our lives John Petraglia wrote that we:
Need personal heroics
We need more light
We need the vernal equinox today
Albert Einstein fashioned that, “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.”
Stars pulled Spencer Johnson from his bed:
And I breathed clarity
imbibed the tincture of the night sky
I leave you with a James Baldwin quote:
“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed unless it is faced.”
