Dear Editor,

As mayor of Yountville, I understand that many residents are feeling confused, frustrated, and concerned about the Commons project. These feelings are real and deserve to be acknowledged. When information feels unclear or conflicting, trust can suffer. I want the community to know that the town recognizes misinformation has been circulating, and we are committed to bringing clarity to the discussion by sharing accurate, original information in a transparent and respectful way.

The workforce housing project being discussed today is not new. It is part of a broader conceptual design that was presented during dozens of prior public meetings. Its purpose, scope and core elements have remained consistent throughout that process. Those meetings included substantial community participation, and many residents expressed support based on the information presented at the time. It is also true that as new details emerge, perspectives can change, and that evolution is both natural and important.

At the Feb. 17 meeting, the Town Council did not take a position on the project’s preliminary cost figures. After hearing additional public input, receiving information about overall project costs and following the successful referendum to overturn the project’s zoning, the council has intentionally refrained from further action or statements. This decision to refrain from action is not indifference, nor is it an endorsement of any particular outcome. It reflects respect for the public process and the seriousness of the concerns raised by residents.

My immediate priority is clarity and trust, not advocacy. I am committed to ensuring that residents have access to reliable information about the workforce housing proposal, including why it was proposed, who it is intended to serve, what approvals occurred in the past and which questions remain unanswered.

In the weeks and months ahead, the town will focus on sharing information and listening carefully. We want to allow residents to be heard in a respectful, transparent and constructive manner.

Yountville is strongest when we address complex issues openly, with civility and a shared commitment to accurate information. The Town Council remains dedicated to those values, and I remain committed to earning and maintaining the community’s trust as this conversation continues.

Sincerely,

Mayor Margie Mohler
Yountville
