Letter to the Editor – When A&W meant lunch from Mom, and classmate envy

Dear Editor,

Just a quick note to Lisa Adams Walter’s article on the last A&W in the Napa Valley. I remember the A&W in American Canyon, but she missed the A&W in the Bel Aire Plaza in the 1970s and early ‘80s. It was located at the north end where Whole Foods is. When the grocery store was expanded it took over the space.

Why do I remember this A&W? My mom would pick up A&W meals for lunch and drop them off at St. Apollinaris for my brothers and me. I’m told later there was some jealousy when our names were announced for lunch pickup from the school office. Enjoying a fresh hamburger while my fellow students were having bologna or peanut butter sandwiches. Loved my mom.

Editor’s note: I do not recall an A&W at Bel Air Plaza, even though I did live in North Napa at that time. Therefore, this is not part of my childhood memories. Very interesting! LAW
