Letter to the Editor – Free speech and transparency at center of Yountville debate

Dear Editor,
I wish to express my support for the Opinion piece submitted by Kim Cook on April 30 titled “Yountville leadership ignored its own warning signs, now faces the fallout.” Her Opinion piece is grounded in factual information, well-considered viewpoints, and displays genuine concern for our community. To date, when she is serving in the role of reporter for the Yountville Sun, Kim has demonstrated impartial and succinct reporting on the subject of The Yountville Commons project.
The First and (and the Fourteenth Amendment Incorporation Doctrine) safeguard our freedom of speech, ensuring that we can share our thoughts and opinions without fear of government retribution.
It’s alarming that Council Member McKee attempted to stifle the Opinion piece author’s voice by chastising The Sun for the publication of this and future important and relevant perspectives.
Kim concluded her article by expressing hope that all parties could move beyond entrenched positions and focus on a common objective.
Unfortunately, the reaction by our councilwoman did not signal any willingness to reach consensus but rather showed a preference for continued discord and lack of transparency, and disregard for constituent interests – not to mention their First Amendment rights.
I ask the Town Council: How can we move forward together on this and other critical matters for our town if this is the approach our council is taking?
Robin Chambers
