Letter to the Editor – Yountville “Cut your losses” and reset the Commons conversation

Sun Letters to the Editor Graphic

Dear Editor,

To Mayor Mohler and the Council –

I attended the Town Council meeting yesterday (May 5), hoping to hear talk about a new plan to move forward with discussions about “What do we do next?”  The council room was packed as it has been at all the meetings lately.  How great to see that so many people care so much about our town to show up!  And many of them stood up to speak.  Most of the speakers were urging the council to take a fresh look at where we are now as regards the Commons project and “Let’s move forward together.”

After all the people spoke, the council didn’t make any plans to have more sessions like the one held today where they could learn more about what people were thinking. They seemed entrenched in their positions. They just seemed to want to hash out the issues of the past weeks and months, i.e. who said what to whom.

When I walked away from the meeting, I had an uneasy feeling. I wondered to myself, what’s going on?  Something felt so disjointed, so off, so uncomfortable.  But after a good night sleep I have been thinking about something I was told by a counselor when I was going through a very difficult time in my life.  He said, “It’s very hard to cut your losses.”  I’ve been wondering why that came to my mind and AI helped me understand what this means. “Cut your losses” means “Stop doing something that is failing or losing before the situation gets even worse,” “Walk away rather than continue to waste time, energy, and resources,” “Give up on a project when the cost of continuing outweighs any potential benefit,” “Throw in the towel,” “Stop the bleeding,” “Bail out,” “Pull the plug.”

It seems very clear to me now, and I urge the council to take this path and “Cut our losses.”  The past is over, we can’t change it, what’s been done is done. Humble yourselves, welcome the community interest, forget what is past, and begin planning how to move forward, together, using the intelligence and energy of the people.

With gratitude to you, Mayor and Council, for your service to our community. We will all be very grateful to you if you will please take this approach forward, without delay.
