Yountville Arts is hosting a festive, free event focused on words next week, with the Bookmark Stories Celebration set for Thursday, Sept. 25, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Yountville Community Center.

The finale of the Bookmark Stories Contest will reveal eight winners, selected from more than 90 submissions of short stories of no more than 60 words from Napa Valley writers. The winning stories will be printed on bookmarks.

“The Bookmark Stories contest is one of those rare projects that brings every generation together through creativity and storytelling,” project chair Geoffrey Leigh said. “It’s inspiring to see how 60 words can hold such imagination. We are proud to bring our community’s big voices to appear on small bookmarks.”

Bookmark Stories Contest supporters, jurors and writers will participate in the evening event to discuss how the technique of concise writing can be useful and share suggestions for writing a strong story, along with insights into creating micro-compositions. The authors will read the winning and honorable mention award stories.

The event includes complimentary refreshments, and attendees can take home bookmarks and copies of the winning stories to inspire their own tiny story compositions for the next competition.

The Bookmark Stories Contest Celebration, sponsored by Yountville Arts, Napa County Libraries and Friends of the Yountville Library, is free and open to all ages. While there is no admission charge, attendees are encouraged to RSVP for a free ticket here for planning purposes. The event will be held in the Heritage Room of the Yountville Community Center, 6516 Washington St., Yountville.
