Letter to the Editor: A Different Perspective on Veterans Home

Sun Letters to the Editor Graphic

Editor’s Note: This letter is in response to Jill Turner’s Sept. 17 letter. The data in this letter has been provided by the author, and has not been verified by the California State Veterans Home.

Dear Editor,

The article listed 10 causes for alarm at the Veterans Home. Jill Turner is seeking a position on the council to represent these poor veterans living in squalor.

Just one example from the list of 10 causes for alarm. At one time 2,000 veterans lived at the home; then it dropped to 1,000 and now today only 600. What is she trying to insinuate?

When we had 2,000 veterans, they slept in open bays on bunks with a foot locker at their feet. When we had 1,000 veterans, we had two veterans per room. Today, 600 veterans have their own room. Sounds good to me!
