Calistoga bicyclist involved in fatal crash is identified

A 79-year-old Calistoga resident was killed this weekend in a road collision on Dunaweal Lane near the Silverado Trail.
Napa County Coroner’s Office on Monday identified Robert French as the bicyclist who died Saturday in a collision with a car at the edge of Calistoga.
French was riding his bike solo, eastbound on the north shoulder of Dunaweal Lane just west of the Silverado Trail, when he crossed into the eastbound lane, into a Ford Mustang headed in the same direction, according to the California Highway Patrol. The collision was reported at 6:35 a.m.
French suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car was not injured, according to the CHP.
The driver remained on scene and “cooperated fully with the investigators,” according to CHP’s written statement. The road was closed for about four hours.
The incident remains under investigation.
Saturday’s deadly collision was the second road-related fatality this month in Napa County.
On April 7, at about 12:15 p.m., a pedestrian was killed on Highway 29 south of Yountville when he walked into the path of a 2012 Peterbilt semi-truck headed southbound, according to the CHP. The truck driver tried but was unable to avoid the pedestrian, the CHP reported.
The Coroner’s Office has identified the pedestrian as Thomas Edward Johnson, 29, of Tampa, Fla. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death remains under investigation, the coroner’s office said Monday.
