The Yountville Library will add a Mardi Gras twist to its weekly Mahjong gathering with MardiMahj, set for Tuesday, Feb. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m.

The celebration is part of Tile Tuesday, a standing Mahjong meet-up held every Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Yountville Library. Participants are invited to wear costumes or Mardi Gras–style masks and are encouraged to bring a packaged snack to share. Photos will be taken during the event to capture the festivities.

Tile Tuesday offers open play for experienced American Mah-jongg players, with guided play available when possible for those newer to the game. The group follows standardized National Mah-jongg League rules, allowing players to build skills and confidence.

As a point of information, both Mahjong and Mah-jongg are correct spellings of this game. The difference signals the version of the game. Mahjong is the common spelling for the traditional Chinese game, while Mah-jongg is the trademarked spelling for the distinct American version played with racks and specific cards.

“Our goal is to build a vibrant social community of American Mah-jongg players in Yountville,” library associate Rebecca Simon said, noting that the weekly gatherings emphasize connection, conversation and fun while sharpening memory, focus and strategic thinking.

The Feb. 10 event marks the group’s first special American Mah-jongg celebration. Organizers invite the public to attend and help spread the word about the growing Tile Tuesday community.

“Mahjong is the new pickleball,” Simon said.
