Yountville Sun Letters to the Editor Policy
Established August 20, 2026
The Yountville Sun welcomes letters to the editor to provide a space for community discussion, engagement and differing points of view. Readers may comment on local issues and share perspectives on matters of public interest. Publication of a letter does not imply endorsement of the author’s views by the Yountville Sun.
Submission Requirements
Letters to the editor should:
- Include the author’s full name and town of residence.
- Anonymous letters will not be published.
- Include a telephone number and email address for verification, if needed. Contact information will not be published.
- Contain original content of the person submitting the letter.
- Cover an issue of community interest.
- Clearly identify any affiliation or financial, political or organizational interest.
- Be limited to two letters per person, per month.
- Be 400 words or less and may be edited at the discretion of the Yountville Sun.
- Be subject to editing for AP style, mechanics, clarity and grammar.
- Offensive or inappropriate language, as well as statements that are libelous or slanderous, will not be published.
- Letters should focus on the opinions of the writer, not facts. Any statement of fact not generally known or accepted to be true may be removed.
- If a letter is submitted in response to a prior published letter or news story, the headline and date of that letter or story should be referred to in the reply.
Editorial Discretion
Submission of a letter does not guarantee publication. All letters are accepted, declined, scheduled or held for publication at the sole editorial discretion of the Yountville Sun and its editorial staff. The editorial staff may consider relevance, timeliness, available space, balance of viewpoints, community interest and consistency with this policy when determining whether and when a letter will be published.
Letters to the Editor During Elections
The Yountville Sun welcomes letters supporting or opposing candidates and ballot measures, subject to the above Letters to the Editor Policy. In addition:
- Writers should disclose campaign positions or significant political or organizational affiliations relevant to the subject of their letter.
- The newspaper may limit the frequency of election-related letters from individual writers to preserve space for a diversity of community voices.
- Coordinated letter-writing campaigns and repeated identical submissions may be limited or declined.
- To promote fairness among candidates, the Yountville Sun will not publish a letter endorsing a political candidate until the newspaper has received an assortment of qualifying letters representing support for all candidates in that particular race. Once such letters have been received, the Yountville Sun will publish one letter in support of each candidate concurrently, providing each candidate equal representation. The selection of the particular letter published in support of each candidate remains at the sole discretion of the editorial staff. If qualifying letters supporting all candidates are not received, candidate-endorsement letters may be held and not published.
- The Yountville Sun will establish a cutoff date before Election Day for letters advocating for or against candidates or ballot measures. Letters regarding election issues or candidates will not be published for the two issues immediately preceding Election Day, allowing adequate time for responses when necessary.
